Bassey recovers from emergency op

Dame Shirley Bassey is in hospital recovering from an emergency operation on
her stomach, her spokesman said today.

The singing legend, 71, was rushed to hospital with abdominal pains in the
middle of the night last week.

She had called out her doctor in Monaco, where Dame Shirley lives, in the
night.

The star, who wowed audiences at last year's Glastonbury festival, is said to
be making a "good recovery" in hospital.

Dame Shirley, who has enjoyed chart success since the late 1950s and sang the
Bond theme tunes for Goldfinger, Diamonds are Forever and Moonraker,
underwent an emergency operation for stomach complications.

The Welsh-born singer is expected to recover in time for her performance at
next month's Nelson Mandela 90th birthday concert in Hyde Park.

Spokesman Paul Carey said: "Dame Shirley Bassey is recovering well after an
emergency operation to relieve stomach complications, after complaining of
abdominal pain last week.

"The Dame was admitted to hospital in Monaco, where she is a resident.

"Doctors performed an emergency procedure and the Dame is making a good
recovery and doctors are happy with her progress."

The Big Spender and No Regrets star attracted a new generation of fans with
History Repeating in 1997, a collaboration with the Propellerheads.

She was made a Dame in 1999.
